A Spotty Situation

When we bought our apartment six years ago, we ripped out the nasty, buckling parquet floors (yuck) and installed wall-to-wall carpet.  It was quicker and easier than doing hardwood floors, and with a couple of rooms with odd corners, we realized that carpet would also be a lot less expensive than hunting down rugs for each room.

As much as I love warm, cozy carpet under my feet in the morning, I was quickly reminded that keeping carpet looking clean and bright can be a challenge.  Especially when one of us (me) tends to walk around the apartment with a full cup of coffee early in the morning.

But now, I feel a bit more at ease if coffee, red wine, or dirt gets into the carpet.  This fall, I am doing a series of TV segments for Carbona, which is sponsoring those segments and this post, showing their Oxy-Powered Carpet Cleaner.  To test this out at home, we tried it out on some set-in dirt stains that had been in our living room for way-too-many-years. We brushed it into the stains, and they came out immediately!

Since red wine tends to be one of the most dreaded carpet spills, in each of these segments, I spill red wine onto carpet and show how quickly and easily Carbona cleans it up! (in case you’re wondering - that is why there is a glass of merlot in front of me on this table).

You can check out the full segment from the syndicated "Daytime" show here.

Happy cleaning!

Afternoon Snack Attack

This article in yesterday's Wall Street Journal - "Is Getting 'Hangry' Actually a Thing?" - caught my attention.  Researchers may debate whether such a thing exists, but whether or not it is real, many of us reach for a snack at some point during the afternoon.

Whether it's finding after-school snacks for kids to something easy to keep in the office fridge or enjoy on-the-go, that snack needs to tide us over until dinner.  This morning, I did segment on "Sonoran Living" in Phoenix that featured these protein-packed snack ideas from Tyson Foods, which sponsored the segment and this post.

Upgrade Your Cookout

When I am getting ready to head to the airport for a TV tour, very few things make me happier than receiving an email from American Airlines announcing "your upgrade has been confirmed."  Sure, the upgrade might be for a 45-minute flight, but each and every upgrade feels like a small win when you take more than 150 flights each year.

Everyday events can be upgraded too, such as Labor Day cookouts or fall tailgate parties.  To make those gatherings a bit more festive,  I did a segment today on the "Daytime" show recommending wines to go with different types of burgers.  I did this segment on behalf of Kobrand Fine Wine & Spirits and Omaha Steaks, both of which sponsored the segment and this post.

Omaha Steaks actually has more than a dozen different types of burgers - there are even options for vegetarians - along with a new line of gourmet burger toppers (can anyone say Smoky Bacon Jam?).  Kobrand has food-friendly wines to suit any taste or budget, from a fruity Louis Jadot Rose (with a twist top!) to my favorite Champagne, Taittinger Brut La Francaise.

Below are the pairings I shared on this segment.  You can check out the full segment below.

Happy School Year!

Where we live in New York, school just got out for the summer a couple of weeks ago.

But in the rest of the country, most school districts are gearing up for the new year.  I love this time of year because I have so much fun checking out all of the new school supplies.  I always end up buying a lot of them for my work, because hey - you're never too old for a sequined notebook!

Here are a few of the ideas I am sharing on TV shows this season for Office Depot/OfficeMax, Jif and Smucker's, and Mattress Firm.  They are sponsoring these segments and this post.

How cute is this Unicorn Backpack Set?

These "reversible" sequined notebooks!  (Where were these when I was eight?)

I don't think you ever get too old for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (especially with an ice cold glass of milk).  While some people may prefer the peanut butter on its own, for many kids, it's better together with the jelly.  For something moms and kids can agree on, try Jif Creamy Natural Peanut Butter (only five simple ingredients!) with Smucker's Natural Strawberry Fruit Spread.  To mix things up a bit, you can also try more creative recipes beyond the traditional PB&J sandwich.  Yum!

After a long summer of staying up late and sleeping in, getting into a regular sleep routine for back-to-school can be a bit of a challenge.  Since educators and sleep experts agree that children who sleep better learn better, they often recommend easing into the new year by moving up bedtime by 10 or 15 minutes each night until you reach your goal bedtime.  Having a good mattress is also part of a healthy sleep routine, and Mattress Firm has a back-to-school special from July 25 through August 14 with deals for the entire family.

Happy New Year!

Getting Campus Ready

For many years after graduating from college, I moved into progressively smaller spaces.

My first apartment was a 1,200 two-bedroom shared with a roommate.  I then moved on to a series of 900-square-foot one-bedroom apartments, and then into a 600-square-foot studio.

Then, I moved to New York City - the land of 200-square-foot studio apartments.

We now occupy 700+ square feet - which feels like a veritable mansion to me.  But those small space decorating skills honed in college certainly paid off long after I finished my degree.  I still keep in practice every year working with Bed Bath & Beyond, which sponsors a series of television segments - and this post - featuring ideas for decorating dorm rooms that are both stylish and functional.
